Cheek augmentation

Our cheeks have a huge impact on how we look. Round, plump cheeks (does the phrase “baby face” ring a bell?) create a youthful appearance and high cheekbones are generally considered attractive.

Why do some people get sunken cheeks?

In fact, the main typical youthful features are:66

  • High cheekbones
  • Full cheeks
  • Well-defined jawline

These three features are often referred to as the “triangle of youth” with the base of the triangle being at the cheeks and the point at the chin.
As we age, the triangle becomes inverted so that the widest part of the face is now at the jawline.58,66

The quality of our skin decreases with the loss of collagen, elasticity and hyaluronic acid. Bone is reabsorbed around our eyes, cheeks and jawline.

Subcutaneous fat, which helps to provide volume, facial contours, and fullness, diminishes: this leads to hollowing under the eyes, flattening in the cheeks and down turned mouth corners.50,58,79

As a consequence, our face may appear deflated and sunken in the cheek area, leaving us with a bitter, sad and tired appearance.50,58,66,79

How can hyaluronic acid treat sunken cheeks?

As we age, the underlying subcutaneous fat cause our skin to sag and our cheeks to flatten out. Moreover, the ability to retain and naturally produce HA decreases, which causes our skin to lose structure and volume to fine skin wrinkles or our cheeks.50,54,58

Since fuller, rounded cheeks are synonymous with youthful beauty, the goal of treatment is to fill in these sunken areas.54
And due to its excellent volume restoring capacity, hyaluronic acid dermal fillers are a good treatment option.54

Which HA treatments are suitable for sunken cheeks?

The simplest and quickest way to restore the lost volume in our cheeks is with HA dermal fillers that are specially formulated to replenish volume.66
Because it can retain up to 1000 times its weight in water, HA is an effective skin-plumping ingredient which adds volume to our skin.50,54,58

Hyaluronic acid fillers designed for superficial lines and wrinkles, such as accordion lines (fine lines that creep up the sides of our face towards the cheekbones), can also be used to improve skin surface texture, radiance and hydration.31,42,66

How many treatments are needed to see satisfactory results?

The great thing about sunken cheeks treatment with HA dermal fillers is that the results are nearly immediate.27
Nevertheless, our skin will settle over the first few days following the injection, by which time the final result can be seen.
The results of HA dermal filler treatments can last up to 24 months.31

Nevertheless, the average duration of treatment depends on several factors: our skin type, the severity of the wrinkle/fold to be corrected, the type of injection and the volume of product injected.75

Marionette lines

Marionette lines are the lines that run from the corners of the mouth to the chin. The problem with marionette lines is that they tend to show emotion, even if we’re not trying to express anything, leading others to believe that we’re sad, angry or disappointed.42,66

Nasolabial folds

Nasolabial folds are sometimes referred to as smile or laugh lines.65These lines typically, curve down from the side of our nose to the corners of our mouth.42
